When I spoke with Claudete Pereira, owner of Organic Brazilian Cleaning, she was multitasking by cleaning a client’s bathroom while we talked on the phone. “I don’t usually clean,” she said, but a new client had come on board and she was training her crew on the first cleaning of the home.
Maintaining high quality standards keeps her clients coming back for more, along with a commitment to green cleaning. “We focus on green cleaning to protect the health of our employees, our clients, and the planet,” Claudete said.
Originally from Brazil, she came to the United States sixteen years ago on a work assignment for the Spanish-owned Telefónica. Moving to Chicago, she met her husband, got married, had kids, and opened her own company.
Claudete started cleaning over ten years ago because she wanted to help busy people get their life back and allow them to spend time with their families. Along with her husband, Adnuar, she launched Organic Brazilian Cleaning three years ago so that she could grow the business and hire staff to help clean.
She finds that she still needs to educate some clients about the benefits of green cleaning and admits that there are some types of cleaning that are tough to do 100% green, such as move out cleans where gunk is caked on the oven. (But they still manage to do it 100% green… just with extra elbow grease.)
When she was first starting out, she got a lot of advice from clients, along with tips from videos and books. She also joined a group of other cleaning companies that acts as a sounding board for issues that arise. “Everybody helps each other with any problems they are having, with employees, finances, worker’s comp, advice about cleaning supplies,” she said.
The best part of running her business is getting thanked by clients when her team is done. “They text us to thank us for everything we do. It’s awesome to get a text or a call that we made their life easier.” Claudete is sure to pass along any praise to her staff and they love feeling appreciated.
Most of all, Claudete likes spending time with her family and she relishes the fact that owning her own business allows her the flexibility to spend more time with her 13-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son. The family enjoys bowling together and eating at various restaurants around town, as well as traveling.
