Recipe for natural, all-purpose cleaner

We asked Gary Downing, founder of Happy Cleaning, to share some of his successful tips for eco-cleaning. This is a recipe that uses fruit skin in an unusual way!

One of my life missions is to open people’s eyes to the dangers of toxic ingredients in conventional cleaning products. Rates of asthma are sky-high because of the use of these products. My goal is to help people become aware of a better way to take care of themselves. With that in mind, I’d like to offer up my recipe for a non-toxic, all-natural, all-purpose cleaner that my clients love and that is not harmful to the environment.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Natural fragrance (essential oil or fruit skin!)

  1. Boil 1 cup water and let it cool to room temperature.
  2. Pour 1 cup white vinegar and the now-room-temperature boiled water into a jar with the skin of the fruit or essential oil.
  3. With a sealed lid, keep it for about three weeks.

Now you have a natural all-purpose cleaner with no chemicals! You can use any type of fruit skin that you have laying around. I’m partial to lemon or orange peels myself.

It’s a known fact that more than 95 percent of the chemicals used in synthetic fragrance are from petrochemicals. Manufactures legally hide hundreds of synthetic chemicals in the one word “fragrance” in their ingredient list. By using essential oil or fruit skin, you’ve created a much healthier sweet-smelling cleaning product.
